I picked this tree up at the end of last fall at a pretty good price, because it had lost the top part of its trunk. I kept looking at it while working at the nursery, and the bark and price combo was calling my name. I felt it was worth a gamble to try and create a nice tree from neglected material.
As purchased last fall.
After the leaves hardened off in late spring.
A midsummer update.
I did a little pruning and wiring this fall to try and find a shape for the tree. The apex needs to get quite a bit taller but I like the new angle and front. I have left a few long shoots for possible thread grafts next spring. At some point I will need to repot it and find the base of the tree, but it will stay in its grow pot for now. I am toying with idea of removing the trunk on the right of the below pictures, probably an air layer.
After stripping the leaves and finding the front I wanted to work with.
The final image this year after some wiring and pruning.
